What are the steps to get disability in Iowa?

If you’re unable to work due to a physical or mental condition, you may qualify for disability benefits in Iowa through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Understanding the steps in the process can help you avoid delays, gather the right documentation, and improve your chances of being approved.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get disability benefits in Iowa, whether you're applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before applying, figure out which program you're eligible for:

  • SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance)
  • Requires a work history where you paid into Social Security
  • You need a sufficient number of work credits, usually 40 (10 years of work), but fewer if you're younger
  • Your condition must prevent substantial gainful activity (SGA)
  • SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
  • Based on financial need, not work history
  • Strict income and asset limits
  • Often comes with Medicaid eligibility in Iowa

Both programs require your condition to:

  • Be severe and prevent full-time work
  • Last or be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death

Step 2: Gather Medical and Personal Documentation

Strong documentation makes your case more convincing. Collect:

  • Medical records from all doctors, clinics, and hospitals
  • Treatment history and medication list
  • Statements from physicians about your limitations
  • Your work history (past 15 years)
  • Personal identification and financial records (for SSI)

Step 3: Apply for Disability

You can apply through any of the following:

  • Online: www.ssa.gov
  • By phone: Call 1-800-772-1213
  • In person: Visit your local Iowa SSA field office (appointment may be required)

Make sure to complete all sections accurately. Mistakes can lead to delays or denials.

Step 4: Your Case is Reviewed by Iowa DDS

Your completed application is sent to Disability Determination Services (DDS) in Iowa. They review your:

  • Medical records
  • Statements from you and your doctors
  • Any new evidence requested (like a consultative exam with an SSA-approved doctor)

This process usually takes 3 to 6 months.

Step 5: Receive a Decision

You’ll get a letter from the SSA telling you whether your claim was approved or denied.

  • If approved:
  • SSDI recipients may get back pay and Medicare eligibility after 24 months
  • SSI recipients can receive monthly benefits and Medicaid right away
  • If denied:
  • Don’t give up—most initial applications are denied. You have the right to appeal.

Step 6: Appeal If Necessary

You have 60 days to appeal an SSA denial. The process includes:

  1. Reconsideration
  2. Hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)
  3. Appeals Council Review
  4. Federal court review (if needed)

Each step gives you a new opportunity to present evidence and win your case.
