What is the disability review process in Iowa?
By Hogan Smith
Updated 07/11/2025
If you are receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits in Iowa, you will undergo periodic Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) to determine if you still meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) requirements for disability benefits. Understanding this process helps you prepare and maintain your eligibility without unexpected interruptions.
Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.
Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.
1. Purpose of the Disability Review
The SSA conducts reviews to ensure that only individuals who remain disabled continue receiving benefits. The review assesses:
- Whether your medical condition has improved
- If your improvement allows you to return to work or engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA)
2. Frequency of Reviews
The timing of reviews depends on your medical condition:
- Expected Improvement: Review every 6-18 months
- Possible Improvement: Review approximately every 3 years
- Not Expected to Improve: Review every 5-7 years
Your award notice will generally indicate your review schedule.
3. The Disability Review Process Steps
A. Receiving the Review Notice
You will receive a
notice from SSA informing you that your case is being reviewed. This notice includes forms you must complete and return by the deadline provided.
B. Completing the Forms
You will be required to fill out one of the following forms:
- Short Form (SSA-455): For cases with minimal changes, asking basic questions about your condition, treatments, and work activity
- Long Form (SSA-454): For more detailed reviews, asking for comprehensive information about your:
- Medical treatment history
- Hospitalizations or surgeries
- Daily activities and limitations
- Any work attempts or income earned
Ensure you complete the forms accurately, thoroughly, and honestly. Missing details can delay your review or result in an unfavorable decision.
C. Medical Evidence Review
The SSA will gather and review:
- Your updated medical records from all treating providers
- Statements from your doctors about your current condition, treatments, and functional limitations
- Results of recent medical tests
If SSA requires additional information, they may schedule a Consultative Examination (CE) with an independent doctor at no cost to you.
D. Determination
A disability examiner and medical consultant will review all evidence to decide:
- If your condition has improved medically
- If improvement allows you to engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA)
If SSA determines that your condition has improved enough for you to work, your benefits may be stopped. However, if they find no significant improvement, your benefits will continue.
4. What Happens if Benefits are Stopped
If SSA decides to terminate your benefits:
- You will receive a notice explaining the decision, along with your right to appeal
- You can request reconsideration within 60 days of receiving the notice
- If you file your appeal within 10 days, your benefits can continue during the appeal process until a decision is reached
5. How to Prepare for Your Review
To ensure a smooth disability review process:
- Continue all medical treatments as recommended
- Maintain regular appointments with your doctors
- Keep detailed records of your symptoms, limitations, and how your condition impacts daily activities
- Save copies of all medical documentation, including lab results, imaging, and therapy notes
- Inform SSA of any changes in your contact information or living situation
